Picture this: You’re standing on the edge of a vibrant turquoise river, and the sound of rushing water is mingling with the distant laughter of adventurers. Above you, the Julian Alps tower majestically, their peaks often kissed by a veil of clouds.

And while you’re staring into that almost-photoshopped river, you’re chewing over just one tiny problem – how the heck to squeeze all the places and adrenaline-pumping activities into your day.

Sweet, sweet problems, my grandma would say. And yes, you need more than just one day, duh. 🙂

Bovec in Slovenia has got to be one of the most underrated adventure destinations in Europe. Nestled in the Soča Valley, this charming town is an absolute gem for outdoor enthusiasts and thrill-seekers.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or someone who just appreciates stunning natural beauty, there are so many fun things to do in Bovec that it will make your head spin and make you wanna come back for more.

Take me as an example – I can’t imagine a year without spending at least a few days in Bovec! Er – living only 3 hours away makes this a tad bit easier, I know.

Where is Bovec?

Ok, before we dive into all the fun stuff, let’s get our bearings straight. Where exactly is Bovec?

Bovec lies in northwestern Slovenia, close to the Italian border, in the heart of the Julian Alps. It’s part of the Upper Soča Valley and close to the western border of the breathtaking Triglav National Park (er – I’d say “our most beautiful national park,” but since we have only one… 😀). This means you’ll be treated to some of the most beautiful alpine scenery in Europe!

If you want to read some practical info about Bovec first, then skip to this part of the post and return to activities later on. If not… read on!

So, what to do in Bovec and how to plan your itinerary? I guess you can’t go wrong by choosing the things you love the most, especially if your time in Bovec is somewhat limited!

Like, you won’t go rafting down the Soča River JUST because everyone on social media does it if you’re scared of strong water currents, ya’ know? I mean, unless you’re all about conquering your fears and all that stuff.

Side note: True story, it helps. I was terrified of sharks, so I was stubborn enough to take a diving course in Cozumel, Mexico. Whether it was a dumb or brave thing to do, I wasn’t quite sure. But now I’m like, “Aaaaw, look at that cutie pie behind that reef, eyeing us innocently!”

30 EXCITING THINGS TO DO IN BOVEC

Bovec is what I like to call “the adventure capital of Slovenia”. But besides being an adventure playground with activities to suit every taste and skill level, it’s also a great place to visit in Slovenia for those who’d like to take in nature’s beauty and, er – not feel like they’re auditioning for an action movie.

Soča Valley also holds an important historical heritage, so if you feel like you’d like to mix in some “educational content” into your action-packed days, you can explore some fascinating sites.

Ok, without further ado, this is what you can do in Bovec!

HIKING IN BOVEC

Surrounded by majestic mountains, Bovec offers plenty of hiking options for every skill level – from easy walks (well, that can be as long as you wish) to the more challenging ascents.

Bovec Loop Walks

If you want to explore the area without breaking a sweat on the hills,  go for a loop walk.

Option 1: Start in Bovec and pass the campsite Polovnik, then follow the signs for Čezsoča. After crossing the bridge, turn left and follow the road along the river until you reach the Brjeka suspension bridge (Brv Brjeka). Cross the Soča again, turn left, and follow the wood trail back along the river that leads you all the way to another suspension bridge. Once you cross it, you’ll arrive at the Toni campsite. From there, follow the signs to walk back to Bovec.

Option 2: After crossing the bridge, turn right and walk along the river all the way to the Soča beach (Plaža Soča). If you’re brave enough, take a quick dip, then return via Čezsoča or the same way you came. Next to the Most čez Sočo bridge, there’s a beach bar Na Mlinču, which is an excellent place to chill by the river after the hike.

HIKE LENGTH: 10km (option 1), 6.5km (option 2)

HIKING TIME: 2,5h (option 1), 1.5h (option 2)

ELEVATION GAIN: 210m (option 1), 100m (option 2)

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? No. Just avoid heels or Birkenstocks, and you’ll be fine.

Virje Waterfall Hike

I’m quite a reward-oriented person, so if you promise me something great at the end of the route—like a waterfall (or a chocolate cake)—I’m gonna be the first one to sign up. Sounds familiar? Then you’ll love the hike to Virje Waterfall. Well, it’s not even a hike, but more of a walk!

Virje Waterfall is a picturesque spot easily accessible from Bovec—either on foot or by car. The waterfall cascades into a beautiful emerald green pool, making it a perfect spot for a refreshing dip on a hot summer day or to capture a scenic photo or five.

Start your hike in Bovec or at the lower station of the Kanin cable car (not operating in season 2024!) and take the gravel road toward the waterfall. Along this path, you’ll pass by the Plužna reservoir and the Gljun Spring. If you get as bored with walking the same route twice as I do, then return to Bovec via the “upper route” (Plužna-Zavrzelno-Klanc Road).

HIKE LENGTH: cca. 8km

HIKING TIME: 2 – 2.5 hours

ELEVATION GAIN: around 200m in total

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR?

NOTE: If walking is not your thing, you can take a hop-on hop-off bus from Bovec to Plužna village or drive to the waterfall as well (there’s a parking lot next to the waterfall).

Krnsko Lake Hike

A hike to Krnsko Jezero, one of the largest alpine lakes in Slovenia, is one of my favorites. Umm, I told ya’ I need a reward somewhere along the way 😂

It’s a moderately difficult hike, and the first hour and a half of the hike is not particularly impressive as you walk up the forest gravel road.

However, once you reach the plateau, you pass through vividly green meadows, with only the sound of cowbells disturbing the silence. The serene lake, surrounded by towering mountain peaks, makes it worth every step.

And if you feel like a two-hour uphill hike isn’t enough, you can always continue all the way to Mount Krn and enjoy superb views of the lake from a bird’s-eye perspective.

STARTING POINT: Dom dr. Klementa Juga v Lepeni (you can reach it with a car or hop-on hop-off bus from Bovec!), approx. 30 min drive

HIKE LENGTH: 12km

HIKING TIME: approx. 2h 15min one way (4h in total)

ELEVATION GAIN: 730m

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Hiking shoes, rain jacket (just in case), hiking poles (optional)

CAN I BRING MY DOG? Sure, Nano loved this hike!

P.S. So many people ask me about these leggings, lol—they are from Alpine Nation, my favorite Slovenian outdoor clothing brand for women. If you want them (or anything else from their store), you can get 20% off your first purchase by booking via this link (yup, my affiliate link; I’m a fan). And no, I don’t have pink hair all the time to match my leggings – it’s just an occasional summer look 😀

Svinjak Hike

When staying in Bovec, it’s hard to miss the mountain with its distinctive peak rising from the midst of the Bovec Valley. But besides an unusual peak, something else is unusual about it – its name, which translates to – Pig House.

Fun fact: most probably, the original name was “Svitnjak”, as “svit” means dawn, and if you’re staying in Bovec, you’ll see that the first morning light touches its peak first. That makes sense, right? You can imagine what happened then – someone was semi-illiteral hundreds of years ago and forgot about the letter T, and the rest is history 😀

The hike to this mountain, which is sometimes also called “the Bovec Matterhorn,” is challenging but offers spectacular views over the Soča Valley and the distant peaks of Triglav National Park.

The first part of the hike is easier, and it allows you to warm up, and then the trail becomes steep and demanding—or so my friend says 🙂; we haven’t tackled this one yet!

Approximately halfway up, you’ll reach a clearing with panoramic views – I guess that’s the kick you need to conquer the most challenging part with rugged terrain and some exposed parts towards the end of the hike.

Be sure to bring plenty of water and a camera to capture the stunning scenery!

STARTING POINT: Kal-Koritnica (a village next to Bovec, reachable by car or Bovec hop-on hop-off bus)

HIKING TIME:  6h

ELEVATION GAIN: 1200m

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Hiking shoes, rain jacket (just in case), food, hiking poles (recommended)

CAN I BRING MY DOG? If used to hiking, Fido will enjoy the trail too.

EXPLORING NATURAL SIGHTS IN BOVEC

Now, an important note: witchcraft knowledge or not, guides and companies have little influence over Mother Nature. This means that all outdoor activities depend on the weather, season, water levels, etc. Don’t get upset if you can’t do something you’ve planned for, like, forever. Find an alternative and relax!

Admire Boka Waterfall

Boka Waterfall, the tallest in Slovenia, is an absolute must-see. It’s especially stunning after heavy rain when it’s at its most powerful. You can check it out from a viewpoint near the road or take a short hike to get a closer look.

You can park in a small gravel lot on the left side of the road before reaching the bridge over the Boka stream. After crossing the bridge, look to your right to find the trail leading to the viewpoint.

You can also choose to hike to the highest viewpoint, which is closer to the waterfall.

WALKING TIME: 30min or 2 hours (if you hike to the highest viewpoint)

ELEVATION GAIN: 50m or 450m (if you hike to the highest viewpoint)

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Light hiking shoes/sneakers and hiking poles (optional, if you hike to the highest viewpoint)

CAN I BRING MY DOG? Yep!

Visit Great Soča Gorges

Just a bit north of Bovec, the turquoise waters of the Soča River have carved gorges featuring dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear pools, and stunning rock formations. This place is one of the natural highlights of the region!

The vibrant hues of the water create a stark contrast with the grey rocks, making it a must-stop for photographers. You can take a stroll along the gorges, chill out on the cliffs, or—if you dare—dip in the cool water.

If you’re driving the Soča Valley, you’ll definitely stop here (the gorges start right next to the road), but you can also reach them from Bovec using public transportation (Bovec hop-on hop-off bus).

ENTRANCE FEE: none

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I SCHEDULE? 1–2 hours

WALKING / HIKING TIME: It depends! It can be none, or you can take a walk along the gorges.

CAN I BRING MY DOG? Yep (but they can’t swim there)

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Swimsuits in the summer, your camera.

Find Paradise on the Sunik Water Grove Trail

Another attraction worth visiting is Sunik Water Grove, a series of small waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and moss-covered rocks tucked away in the Lepena Valley north of Bovec.

The trail leads you alongside Sunik Stream, where the sound of cascading water and the vibrant greenery create a fairytale-like atmosphere. I was utterly impressed by it when I visited several years ago and couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard about it before!

The trail is well-marked and relatively easy, making it accessible for all skill levels.

ENTRANCE FEE: none

HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD I SCHEDULE? 30min – 1h

WALKING / HIKING TIME: 30min total (700m one way)

ELEVATION GAIN: 50m

CAN I BRING MY DOG? Yep!

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Light hiking shoes

WATER ACTIVITIES IN BOVEC

There are several options for water-related activities in Bovec, so choose whatever floats your boat! Er—see what I did there? 😛

Try Kayaking in Bovec

The Soča River is famous for its stunning emerald-green waters, making it a paradise for kayakers who come here from all over Europe. But guess what? You don’t need to be a professional kayaker to paddle down the Soča! Plenty of adventure companies in Bovec offer guided kayaking tours catering to all skill levels – from family and couple kayaking trips to several days-long kayaking courses!

PRICE: starting at approx. 65€ pp

Go Rafting on the Soča River

Bovec is most known for white water rafting, so if kayaking isn’t your thing, this might be your best choice for a water-based adrenaline kick! Similar to kayaking, rafting is also suitable for complete beginners (or families) since you book a guided rafting tour on the Soča River tailored to your experiences.

I tried rafting in Bovec many years ago, and I remember being most scared of the powerful river rapids. But in the end, the biggest shock came during the so-called warm-up exercises shortly after we started in calm waters. Our guide rocked the raft, causing us all to fall into the cold river! 😀 He kind of tricked us into realizing what could happen, showing us that the river wasn’t that scary after all.

PRICE: starting at approx. 65€ pp

Go Snorkeling & Riverwalking

Ok, even I didn’t know it was possible to go snorkeling in Soča River – especially because my first thought when thinking about snorkeling would be, “I’m gonna freeze”. But no, it turns out it’s quite doable with a wetsuit! You can explore the underwater world and shores in the Učja Canyon Gorge. Soča Splash offers these tours, so check them out!

Take a Dip in the Soča River

In between all the adventures, it’s perhaps time to slow down for an hour or two. Grab a towel (and a beer if you want), find a place by the Soča River, and just chill—with the occasional cold dip. You won’t need a fridge for that beer; Soča is cold enough, believe me.

Some of the places we like to chill at are along the river between the Brjeka and Jablanca suspension bridges, under the suspension bridge over the Koritnica River, or near Cezsoca Bridge (Most Čezsoča).

Try Canyoning in Sušec Canyon

Seeking an extra adrenaline rush? Then opt for canyoning in Bovec! This thrilling activity involves jumping, sliding, and rappelling down waterfalls as you descend through the canyon. It’s an amazing way to experience the natural beauty of the area up close while getting your heartbeat up, up, up!

I haven’t tried canyoning yet, but my husband did (in the canyon near Bled Lake) and said it was incredibly fun! If you’re a beginner, they’ll take you to Sušec Canyon, and for those looking for a more challenging adventure, there’s an intermediate canyoning at Fratarica Canyon or you can even opt for an advanced canyoning tour in Predelica Canyon.*

*There are a few other canyoning options available, but I’ve listed the most popular ones

PRICE: starting at 60€ pp

Paddleboarding on Soča River

Everything else above (well, except that chilling part) sounds a lil’ bit too adventurous for you? Then you could try paddleboarding, which is fun and quite easy – all you need is to know how to swim and to have some basic balance to be able to stand on the paddleboard (SUP), and then you can go as fast as you want (or don’t want).

PRICE: approx. 55€ pp (a group tour, not SUP rent)

ADRENALINE ACTIVITIES IN BOVEC

If you enjoy the thrill and adrenaline-pumping activities are right up your alley, you’ll absolutely love Bovec! There’s way more to do here than just paddling down the Soča River!

Zipline Across the Soča Valley

Ziplines are so much fun! I’ve tried ziplining down the Planica ski jump in Kranjska Gora, in Lendava (Prekmurje region in Slovenia), and even Kotor in Montenegro, but ziplining in Bovec is still on my to-do list! You see, Bovec features one of the biggest zipline parks in Central Europe, with 10 lines that span across the Učja Canyon! If you want to combine adrenaline rush with amazing views, that’s what you need to do in Bovec!

You can book the experience with the majority of tour operators in Bovec that will take you to the park.

PRICE: 65-70€ pp

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Sneakers or light hiking shoes (not sandals or flip-flops!)

Go Mountain Biking on Scenic Trails

Bovec is a great destination for mountain biking, with several trails suitable for both those who have given up on the idea of ever riding down the “red trails” (this might or might not be me 😂) and those who just loooove technical single trails. Also, Bovec Bike Park is supposed to open this year!

There are also many experienced MTB guides in Bovec who can take you on a fun tour tailored to your skill level. Plus, you can rent a mountain bike or e-bike if you don’t have your own!

MTB TOUR PRICES: starting at 60€ pp

eBIKE RENTAL: around 25€ /day

Paraglide Over the Julian Alps

Paragliding over the majestic Julian Alps and Bovec Valley is a unique and unforgettable experience. All of my friends who’d done it said the views from above are simply breathtaking, and the sense of freedom you feel as you soar through the air is exhilarating. (Yeah, that one is still on my bucket list!)

There are several companies in Bovec that offer tandem paragliding flights, so even if you’re a beginner, you can still experience the thrill.

PRICE: starting at 190€ pp

Go on a Caving Adventure in Bovec

Did you know that there are more than 13.000 discovered caves in Slovenia?

Well, I know – mostly because my friend loves all things rocks and caves, so I spend a good amount of time listening about it (When we’re pushing our mountain bikes uphill, and I’m half dead, that’s when she especially likes to chat, looking super fresh and all that Wonder Woman sh*t.).

So, back to caves! If you’re fascinated by the underground world, stalagmites, and billions of years old fossils and don’t mind crawling on all fours from time to time, you can book a guided tour to explore Mala Boka or Srnica caves. Just a word of advice – if you’re claustrophobic, then,  er – perhaps skip this one?

PRICE: approx. 65€ pp

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Light hiking shoes or sneakers, swimsuits

Go Rock Climbing

Despite most of our friends being rock climbers (it’s a thing among Slovenians and one of the most popular adventure activities here), my husband and I have been successfully avoiding this sport—for now! 😂 I’d love to start rock climbing, but my schedule and my wallet, both pretty much depleted by all the other sports activities, loudly beg me not to add another one to the mix.

Bovec offers several rock climbing areas for all skill levels, and the best part is that you can try climbing even if you’re a complete beginner. It’s a great way to spend some fun, quality time with the entire family. Tbh, I’m so intrigued about doing this—but also equally scared because I’m pretty sure I’ll be hooked once I try!

PRICE: approx. 75€ pp

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Sports clothes – leggings or light pants.

Go Skydiving in Bovec for the Ultimate Adrenaline Rush

Feeling extra brave? Looking for Well, jump off the plane, then! 😉 Bovec might be a tiny town, but it has its own recreational airport, where people can learn to skydive or try skydiving in tandem with an experienced instructor.

So if the idea of free-falling doesn’t scare the sh*t out of you, this is an experience you’ll never forget.

PRICE: from 270€ pp

OTHER THINGS DO IN BOVEC

Now that we’ve covered nature and adrenaline let’s move to other cool things to do in Bovec!

Visit the Outdoor Museums Ravelnik and/or Čelo

The Soča Valley and Bovec played a significant role in World War I as the site of the Isonzo Front, where intense battles between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces took place. This region witnessed some of the most grueling mountain warfare, and you can still see the memorials and remnants of wartime structures.

The Ravelnik open-air museum is one such place where you can walk around trenches, caverns, bunkers, and renovated shacks. Ravelnik’s role in WWI was to defend an important supply road over the Predel mountain pass.

You can visit the open-air museum by yourself or contact the local tourism office to organize a guided tour with a uniformed soldier from “The 1313 Association” to get a glimpse into what life was like on the front during WWI.

ENTRANCE FEE: none

WALKING / HIKING TIME: 5 minutes if you come by car, approx. 30 min from Bovec to Ravelnik Museum (1.5h to Čelo outdoor museum)

ELEVATION GAIN: mostly flat, 250m if you decide to hike up to Čelo

CAN I BRING MY DOG? Yep!

DO I NEED SPECIAL GEAR? Light hiking shoes

Explore the Kluže Fort

Another historical site to explore is the Kluže Fort. Originally built in the 15th century, this fort has played a significant role in the region’s history. It’s situated in a stunning location, perched above a deep gorge, and inside you’ll find a small museum and exhibition that are worth a visit.

Above Kluže, there is another fort—Hermann Fort—which can be reached by a path carved into the rocky cliff that leads through a stone tunnel, taking approximately 30 minutes to walk.

Kluže Fort is a short drive from Bovec (less than 10 minutes), and the Bovec hop-on hop-off bus stops there as well.

ENTRANCE FEE (adults): 5,00 €

OPENING TIMES: May – weekends, Jun-Sep daily from 10 AM to 5 PM

CAN I BRING MY DOG? Dogs can’t go into the museum, but you can walk around the fort with them or hike up to Fort Hermann.

A stone building with a grassy hill in the background - Kluze fort near Bovec, a place worth visiting on your Soča valley road trip.

Escape from the Escape Room!

Sure, you’ve come for outdoor activities! But Escape Room in Bovec is a perfect plan B if the weather decides not to cooperate. The theme is the “prison break,” and you have exactly one hour to find your way to freedom.

It’s another kind of adventure that’s just as exciting!

PRICE:  60€ for 2 people + 15€ pp for more

Take a Yoga Class

Breathe in, breathe out.  This drill might come in handy if you plan to go canyoning or skydiving in Bovec. Or just because. The peaceful ambiance of the Soča Valley provides the perfect backdrop for a serene yoga session, so join a local yoga class or retreat to unwind and practice yoga surrounded by stunning alpine scenery.

Explore Bovec Town

While you’re in town, you might as well explore it, right? Wander around the charming streets of Bovec, where you’ll find quaint shops, cozy cafes, and tour operators ready to help you plan your next adventure. Visit the local market to try fresh products or find unique souvenirs. A street food stall, Bovec Kitch’n (Wed-Sun, main square), offers yummy local dishes! In July and August, stop by the Museum Strgulčeva Hiša to learn about the town’s rich history.

During summer, the Bovec Summer Nights festival features various concerts that transform the main square into a lively hub of music, with a festive atmosphere and food stalls offering local products.

A picturesque town square with pastel-colored buildings, a tree in the center, and mountains in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

Get Inspired at BOFF

A few days before the NYE, BOFF (Bovec Outdoor Film Festival) takes place in Bovec, where adventure enthusiasts gather to watch incredible (short-ish) outdoor and adventure movies —things we WANNA try but will probably only ever attempt from the safety of our couch! Well,  you might actually meet the superheroes from the movies!

We went a couple of times already and it’s a fun way to get inspired and mingle with like-minded folks.

Go on a Brewery Tour at Thirsty River Brewing

Yes, Bovec even has a microbrewery! If you’re a fan of craft beers, that’s the perfect way to end your adventure-packed day—with a brewery tour or beer tasting.

And if you feel too tired after the tasting, good news—the place also has apartments and a hostel! Clearly, they’ve been thinking two steps ahead.

Chill Out at the Best Chill Out Bar in Bovec

I have to mention this one because our trips to Bovec aren’t complete without chilling out at the coolest bar in town: Yurty Bar.

This yurt-shaped bar is the epitome of good vibes. At first glance, its chairs might look uncomfortable, but trust me, they can easily keep you there for hours. With non-commercial music, craft beers on tap (from my favorite Slovenian craft brewery – Reservoir Dogs!), homemade spirits, yummy coffee, and their signature vividly pink gin tonic, it’s no wonder I keep coming back. Great, this now sounded like I’m an alcoholic.

I tried working on my laptop there once, but the signal was shite. I realized there must be a reason for that! 😀 So, after a day of activities, this is the perfect place to unwind.

Yurty Bar is located between campsites Vodenca and Toni, approximately a 20-minute walk from Bovec “downtown.”

Drive the Magnificent Mangart Saddle

The Mangart Saddle is the highest and most scenic panoramic road in Slovenia. The pass itself is a starting point for a hike to Mangart, a challenging trail that includes wedges and steel cables (via ferrata). There is a mountain hut open during the season, and a short walk rewards you with amazing scenery and breathtaking views of the Julian Alps and Lago di Fusine in Italy.

Please note that the road is narrow and curvy. If you’ve only had your driving license for two months, you might find it a bit daunting, as you may need to drive close to the mountain edge or reverse when meeting other cars.  The Mangart Saddle is open to vehicles when conditions allow, usually from late spring to autumn, and there is a €10 ecological tax to drive the road (paid at the toll).

There’s also the option to hike to the Mangart Saddle! The hike is technically undemanding, but the elevation gain is over 800 meters. The starting point is at Viadukt Mlinč, one of the stops on the hop-on hop-off bus route.

FUN FACT: the hop-on hop-off bus does go to the Mangart Pass! So instead of driving the road, you can make yourself comfortable by the bus window and stare into the ambush below you. Lovely.

Take a Half-day Trip to Lago di Predil

Lago di Predil is a picturesque alpine lake—one of the largest in the region—located in Italy, near the border with Slovenia. Its surrounding mountains, deep green waters, and white pebble beaches make the lake a truly captivating spot. The water is pretty cool, but on a hot summer day, it feels just about perfect for swimming!

There is a walking path that leads you all around the lake, although several parts of the path run next to the road, which isn’t my favorite thing ever. Nevertheless, the views are stunning in every direction. The lake isn’t as serene as it used to be, as it’s almost impossible to find a parking spot on summer weekends during the middle of the day. However, if you choose to walk on the side opposite the restaurant hut, you’ll be rewarded with some solitude 🙂

There’s also a windsurfing center by the restaurant where you can rent windsurfing equipment, kayaks, and paddleboards. If you’re not into sports activities and just want to enjoy nature, “picnic & chill” is also a fantastic option!

You can reach Lago di Predil in approx. 30 min by car or by an organized paddleboard tour from Bovec. If you’re driving by yourself, stop at the nearby Fort Predil (on the Slovenian side),  an interesting historical site to explore. The fort dates back to the Napoleonic Wars and offers great views of the surrounding area.

What do you think? Have I given you enough ideas on what to do in Bovec? 🙂

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR VISITING BOVEC

I also wanted to share some practical info about visiting Bovec with you, so you can have everything neatly stored in one place—because who doesn’t love a good travel hack, right? Plus, it’s way better than frantically Googling things at the last minute!

Where to Stay in Bovec

I’ve been to Bovec many times – mostly with our campervan, but I stayed in apartments and hotels as well. Even though it’s small, Bovec offers plenty of accommodation options to suit different budgets and preferences. Here are some recommendations:

Camping: For those who love the outdoors, camping is a great option. Camp Polovnik is the best choice if you want to be close to the center of town (but the downside is a nearby road), while campsites near the confluence of the Soča and Koritnica rivers are popular among kayakers and other outdoor enthusiasts. So far, I’ve been to Liza, Toni, and Kovač—and I like them all. It really comes down to your location preference!

PRO TIP: During the high season, you’ll have to book campsites in advance. Once, we arrived in Bovec around August 15th, only to realize ALL the campsites in the entire Soča Valley were full. Luckily, we found a free spot at a camper stop next to the Kanin cable car in Bovec.

Glamping – aka fancy camping 😀 You can choose between simple glamping houses in Camp Liza, or more swanky options like Glamping Resort Bovec or Glamping Gozdna Jasa.

Apartments: If you prefer a more home-like experience, consider renting an apartment. There are SO many high-rated options available on Booking and other rental platforms. We stayed here once, but if I had money, I’d buy this one! 😂

Hotels: For those who dream about a soft bed and crisp white linens after a day of adventures, Bovec offers several hotels. Popular options include Hotel Soča, Boutique Hotel Dobra Vila, and Hotel Boka.

My Favorite Restaurants in Bovec

After a day of adventure, the food tastes even better! Plus, you can eat more without worrying about extra calories—lol.

Here are some of my favorite restaurants in Bovec:

Gostišče Sovdat: Known for its traditional Slovenian cuisine, this restaurant is my absolute favorite. The hearty dishes are perfect after a long day of hiking or rafting. If you’re not a vegetarian, try their game goulash, I also loved gnocchi with gorgonzola, and you must try a traditional Bovec dessert – Bovški krafi!

Gostišče Martinov Hram: A cozy, family-run restaurant known for its delicious traditional Slovenian cuisine is a popular spot for tourists and locals. Try their “chompa with sheep’s curd”!

Letni Vrt: This restaurant has a lovely outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying a meal outside while people-watching 😀. We also had dinner here on New Year’s Eve once, and the food was delicious!

Gostilna pod Lipco: This restaurant next to the campsite Polovnik has a simple setting, but I was surprised by the food – I can recommend their pizzas and žlikrofi with gorgonzola.

Črna Ovca: My husband loves this pub-like restaurant near the tennis court in Bovec (oh right, another thing to do in Bovec!). He said to go for pork ribs or a pulled pork burger with a pint or two.

A plate of seasoned potato wedges and grilled meat, a basket of fries, and a sandwich with an onion ring on a wooden table.

How to Get to Bovec from Ljubljana

Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

BY CAR: Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Bovec and the Soča Valley. You can rent a car in Ljubljana Airport or in Ljubljana.

You can reach Bovec from four directions:

  • Via Vršič Pass:
    • Route: Ljubljana → Jesenice → Kranjska Gora → Vršič Pass → Bovec.
    • Highlights: This route takes you through Slovenia’s highest mountain pass, the Vršič Pass, and this is actually the first part of a scenic Soča Valley Road Trip, my favorite road trip in Slovenia!
    • Travel Time: approx. 2.5 hours
  • Via Predil Pass:
    • Route: Ljubljana → Jesenice → Kranjska Gora → Tarvisio (Italy) → Predil Pass → Bovec
    • Highlights: Cross into Italy and then back into Slovenia via the scenic Predil Pass, you can stop by the Predil Lake (Lago di Predil)
    • Travel Time: approximately 2.5 – 3 hours
  • Via Idrija and Tolmin:
    • Route: Ljubljana → Idrija → Tolmin → Kobarid → Bovec
    • Highlights: This route takes you through Idrija, famous for its mining heritage, lace-making tradition (products from Idrija lace are an extremely popular souvenir), and žlikrofi – traditional Slovenian dumplings (My grandpa was from Idrija and they are my favorite dish EVER!).
    •  Travel Time: Approximately 3 hours
  • Via Nova Gorica:
    • Route: Ljubljana → Postojna → Nova Gorica → Kanal ob Soči → Bovec
    • Highlights: This route passes by the famous Postojna Cave and the wine region around Nova Gorica. It also follows the Soča River from Kanal ob Soči to Bovec, and you can visit several stunning places along the way.
    • Travel Time: Approximately 3 hours
  • Via Bohinj and Tolmin (useful if You’re visiting Bled or Bohinj first)
    • Route: Ljubljana → Bled  → Bohinj → Podbrdo → Tolmin → Bovec
    • Highlights: This route takes you through several scenic places – Bled and Bohinj Lake, Soriška Planina, Tolmin, and Kobarid. Or you can hop on a car train in Bohinj and travel with a train to Kobarid!
    • Travel Time: Approximately 3 hours

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: There are regular buses from Ljubljana to Bovec, which also take about 2.5 hours. Check out timetables here.  Alternatively, you can take a train from Ljubljana to Most na Soči and then go by bus from there to Bovec.

Getting Around Bovec

While Bovec is a small town and many activities are within walking distance, having a car can be beneficial if you want to explore the surrounding areas on your own schedule. The second best option is tourist buses that connect Bovec with popular places and starting points for hiking.

NOTE: Sadly, dogs are currently NOT allowed on these buses. 🙁 This means that renting a car will be the easiest solution if you’re exploring Bovec with your pup. I hope this changes in the future, though.

Renting a bike is also a great way to explore the local area. Bovec has several bike rental shops, and the town is bike-friendly, with many trails and paths.

Soča Valley Road Trip

If you have a car, a road trip through the Soča Valley is surely one of the highlight trips in Slovenia!

Kobarid

Just a short drive from Bovec, Kobarid is a small town with a big history. Visit the Kobarid Museum to learn about the significant battles fought here during WWI and the Italian Charnel House, an important historical site. Don’t miss the Kozjak waterfall—it’s one of the most photographed waterfalls in Slovenia!

Tolmin

Further down the Soča Valley, Tolmin is another picturesque town worth visiting. The Tolmin Gorges are its highlight!

OTHER FAQS ABOUT BOVEC

Is Bovec worth visiting?

You know that by now, right? Abso-freakin-lutely! Bovec is a fantastic destination for adventure addicts, outdoor lovers, and history enthusiasts. Whether you’re a solo traveler, traveling with friends, your better half, or your family, I’m sure Bovec won’t leave you disappointed. Psst, don’t tell—but I prefer Bovec over Bled! 😀

When is the best time to visit Bovec?

The best time to visit Bovec depends on what activities you’re interested in. Summer is great for hiking, and some other outdoor activities, while kayaking and rafting are also popular in other seasons.

What’s the Weather in Bovec like?

Here’s a quick overview of what to expect from the weather (although you’re in the Julian Alps so EXPECT UNEXPECTED):

  • Spring (March to May): Spring in Bovec is cool and wet, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C. This is a great time for hiking and enjoying the blooming wildflowers.
  • Summer (June to August): Summer is the peak tourist season, with temperatures up to 30°C. This is the best time for swimming in the Soča River without freezing your a$$ off!
  • Autumn (September to October): Autumn offers cooler temperatures and fewer tourists. The fall foliage makes the landscapes gorgeous, so it’s a perfect time for a (photo) road trip!
  • Winter (November to February): Winter brings colder temperatures and (rarely) snow.  November is the wettest month, while January and February are the driest.

Can I visit Bovec in winter?

Yes, Bovec is also a fantastic winter destination. We’ve spent many New Year’s Eve in Bovec (it’s become kind of a tradition of ours), and while you won’t be able to visit all the places, there are plenty of things to do to keep you busy during the winter months, like winter hiking, snowshoeing, ice climbing, or skiing in the nearby Sella Nevea Resort (Italy). Sadly, the Kanin ski resort (above Bovec) is closed in the 2024 season, but Sella Nevea is just a short drive away.

Is Bovec in Triglav National Park?

Bovec is located on the outskirts of Triglav National Park. This means you’ll probably “end up within the borders” of the park sooner or later, so make sure to get familiar with the park’s rules. Read more about TNP here.

How many days do I need for Bovec?

I’d say plan for at least three to four days. This way, you’ll have plenty of time to try the main activities and explore the surrounding areas without feeling rushed. Plus, you’ll need at least a day to recover from all the adventures—and maybe another day to recover from your recovery day! 😛

Is Bovec dog-friendly?

Yes, Bovec is very dog-friendly—we always take our dogs with us. Many hiking trails and outdoor areas welcome dogs, and there are plenty of pet-friendly accommodations available. We always take them to restaurants with us, but it’s a good idea to call in advance to be sure if you plan to dine inside. The only not-very-much-dog-friendly-thing is the public transport, making it difficult to visit places outside Bovec without a car.

In the morning, you’re crossing a mountain pass with snow-capped peaks; by afternoon, you’re rolling through vibrant green valleys; and tomorrow? Maybe across yellow-green steppes or skimming the edge of a fjord surrounded by dense rainforest. Welcome to the Carretera Austral road trip.
